Jesus and the disciples at the sea of Tiberias

Read John 21 v 1 to 19

The first three verses seem to read as though Peter was waiting for something to happen! It is difficult to be certain exactly when the incident occurred in relation to the other incidents recorded at this time. Peter, impatient as ever for something to happen, decided to make it happen himself - he suggested a fishing trip. It turned out to be not very successful, as the end of verse 3 tells us.

Verses 4 to 6 relate how Jesus, who at the time wasn’t recognised by them, told them where to cast their nets.

John 21 v 6 And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Cross Reference

Luke 5 v 4 to 7

Peter’s mind would immediately go back to the similar incident early on in the ministry of Jesus, which we looked at in Session 3. The first incident convinced Peter that Jesus was special, this second one had a similar effect. Verse 7 tells us that Peter could not get to Jesus fast enough - he abandoned the boat and his fellows and went to Jesus.

John 21 v 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.

 Loaves and fishes

Echo

Luke 9 v 13 to 17

Again the disciples are reminded of a previous provision of loaves and fishes by Jesus.

John 21 v 12 and 13 Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?" - knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

What a breakfast this must have been! Jesus would no doubt have continued to help them in their understanding of what had just happened.
