Jesus appears on the road to Emmaus

Read Luke 24 v 13 to 32

24 v 21 "But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened."

This verse summarises all the disciples’ hopes of Jesus. We looked in Session 1 at some of the things which were said at his birth. As we mentioned earlier, they were right to expect them, but they did not realise that his death and resurrection must come first.

24 v 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

What an exposition of scripture this must have been! Have a look at some of the cross references from this verse in the Cross References page to see some of the verses Jesus may have used.

Read Luke 24 v 33 to 49

The two who had seen Jesus on the road to Emmaus then rushed back to Jerusalem.

Their minds would no doubt be in a whirl! Try to imagine their position:

  • Their leader and respected friend who they thought would become King of Israel had been crucified
  • The body had been stolen from under the noses of the guard - they would all be suspects. What were the authorities going to do about that?
  • They would probably be terrified, wondering who would be arrested next. Most of them were of humble background, not used to being involved in power politics

But:

  • John seemed to be of the opinion that Jesus was alive
  • The women had also brought reports of actually seeing Jesus

When the human mind is emotionally upset, it often cannot think logically.
