The resurrection

Luke 24 v 1 Now on the first day of the week

The references show that these women who looked after Jesus during his ministry were more loyal than most. They all came to the tomb expecting the body of Jesus to be there:

 Luke 24 v. 1

Cross Reference

Luke 8 v 2 and 3;
23 v 55 and 56

24 v 2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

Look at the cross-references and find more detail about the stone that was rolled away:

Luke 24 v. 2

Cross Reference

Matthew 27 v 60 to 66; 28 v 2

  • The stone was sealed
  • It was guarded by a Roman guard
  • These was an earthquake
  • An angel rolled the stone back

Matthew 28 v 11 to 15 tells us what happened to the Roman guard when they reported to the chief priest the events they had witnessed. This forms part of the evidence of the resurrection which we will look at later.

24 v 3 and 4 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.

While it is not easy to reconcile all four gospel records, it seems that John 20 v 2 happens between verses 3 and 4 of Luke 24. That is to say, Mary Magdalene came with the other women to the tomb, but, seeing the tomb empty, she did not stay with the other women but went and told Peter that the tomb was empty.
